As our population on the peninsula ages having a place for extended family to live that is close to loved ones and affordable is becoming a bigger issue. As we try to find ways to care for our parents and keep them close to home making a place for them in our home or in our backyard is becoming the preferred way to go.
Adding one bedroom/one bath units in a basement or open area in a oversized garage is one way to go. It’s usually less expensive and easier to get the city cities approval for one of these options if your home will accommodate the addition.
Adding a cottage or In-Law in your backyard is the more expensive,time consuming and more difficult way to to go. Get a cities approval for the plans is very time consuming, costly and at times frustrating. With all that said, the privacy advantages of having a separate unit makes adding a cottage the most sought after way to add the extra living space.
Finding a contractor, an architect and going through the red tape involved to get your project done is a very daunting process and not for the faint of heart.

It’s Monday and that can mean only one thing…….Food Trucks in Belmont! Every Monday when I drive by on my way home I pass 1325 El Camino Real where the trucks park, it’s the train station parking lot at the corner of El Camino and Ralston Ave. The parking lot is getting fuller and fuller with each passing week with happy customers enjoying this fun new way to dine in Belmont. This week there will be nine trucks to choose from The Chairman, The Creme Brulee Carte, El Sur, Sanguchon, An the Go, Hiyaaa, We Sushi, Sam’s Chowder Mobile, Me So Hungry Too. I am looking forward to a Lobster Roll from Sam’s Chowder Mobile myself.
